I have been physically active since I was a little youngster. I always loved playing sports, running and testing my abilities to perform.
-Did you play sports in high school and/or college?
I was actively involved in baseball, tennis and golf. I wrestled and played on the high school tennis team as well as trained with the Junior Davis cup tennis team.
-Did you study health and fitness in an academic setting?
I earned my degree in Human Nutrition and Exercise Physiology at Virginia Tech. I also placed runner up at the first Virginia Tech body building championship.
-How do you seek out continuing education?
I have kept up with continuing education in the areas of nutrition and exercise science. I’ve also expanded my capabilities to serve my clients by becoming a certified success coach, thus allowing me to help them work through behaviors, beliefs and attitudes that hold them back from achieving their goals. Mental training serves as a big adjunct to the overall success of their program.
-Do you specialize in a training style?
My years of experience in weight loss, bodybuilding and strength training has allowed me to expand my specialty in the areas of sports specific training and performance, exercise rehabilitation and mental training. As a nutritionist I help athletes and clients alike make wise food choices. I also bring into play sports nutrition and nutrient timing to enhance energy and recovery. I’m a firm believer in creating congruence among all the training variables to assure my clients attains the greatest success in the shortest amount of time. My greatest passion is witnessing their progress change before my eyes. Results!
-What is your coaching style? (Cheerleader vs. drill sergeant)
My strength as a trainer/success coach is my ability to listen and observe minute details. I first acutely observe what the client really wants (often it is more than just a performance outcome) and get down to what really inspires them to seek the results they are looking for. I let them know it is a team effort and together we will work through and communicate what needs to be known so that we can make the necessary changes that propel us to the desired outcome the client seeks. My greatest strength is my commitment to purpose. I hold with conviction the outcome we want to attain and do whatever it takes safely and effectively to help the client reach their goals. Plus, I like to work with clients who like to have fun and laugh along the way.
-Do you include a health assessment prior to beginning a fitness program?
Yes, I find it very important to know what pre-existing conditions I need to work with that has to be taken into consideration before we start training. I have vast experience working with a variety of issues such as joint injuries and mobility; high blood pressure and cholesterol, asthma, metabolic and eating disorders, posture and spinal issues, balance and flexibility and of all things, holding the baby so mommy can do her workout.
-How frequently do you see your clients? (Once a week, twice a week?)
I train clients from once, twice to three times a week. All depends on the availability of my schedule as well as the time objective and commitment the client is willing to make.
-What kind of clients do you usually work with and what results were they trying to attain?
I never know what challenges come my way but I have clients that come for a variety of reasons and issues. The beauty is with over 3 decades of experience I feel confident in my abilities to address any challenges. Most common objective my clients want are weight loss, strength and muscle toning, diet and nutrition guidance. Training for sports performance with professional athletes and teenagers, injury rehabilitation, mental training (includes but not limited to behavior re-patterning, peak performance and creating successful mindset training) and simply looking and feeling better about themselves for health reasons are quite common.
-Where did you get certified to be a personal trainer? (N.S.C.A., N.A.S.M., and A.C.S.M. are the gold standards)
In addition to my degree in nutrition and exercise science, I am certified as a personal trainer with the national academy of sports medicine.
