City to Shore 2012 - Leisure Fitness and the ElliptiGOs

Named by Bicycling Magazine as the “Best Cycling Getaway in NJ,” the Bike MS: City to Shore Ride promises to be the best cycling experience on the east coast.

Cyclists of all ages and abilities came together to bike for MS, on September 29th & 30th. Riders chose courses from 25 miles to 100 miles in length. The courses offered different terrains and scenery, keeping you entertained as you rode through places like the Pine Barrens and Ocean City. Rest stops were provided every 15 miles or so with beverages, snacks, and even bike mechanics to ensure safe riding.

Last weekend, we had another team of ElliptiGo riders participate in a Biking MS event. If you recall, last weekend, we did a 17 Mile Ride in the Bike to the Bay in Delaware. This ride took our team to the shores of New Jersey. Our team, of 12 riders, including employees, spouses, and customers, finished a 25 mile City to Shore Ride in under 2 hours! Way to go team!

Bike to the Bay 2012

Bike MS Bike to the Bay 2012: Leisure Fitness and the ElliptiGOsBike to the Bay, September 22, 2012

In case you missed it, here’s a recap of this past Saturday’s ride at the MS Bike to the Bay.  A total of about 2,000 people (cyclists, volunteers, and participants) came together for this cause. Riders raise money and donate their time in the name of providing hope for over 1,550 Delawareans living with MS.  Pledges, or donations, received provide funding for important research into what causes MS, look into more effective treatments, and hopefully one day a cure. Additionally, it is important to know that the funds are also used to support local programs and services for our fellow Delawareans living with MS.

The Bike to the Bay is the largest and longest running cycling event of its kind in Delaware. Cyclists can decide how much of a challenge they wish to endure by choosing routes from 17 miles to 175 miles. While this sounds intense, rest stops are provided every 8-12 miles. Refreshments, and more importantly shade, are available for cyclists. Supporters were present at rest stops cheering on their riders too! As it stands now, total raised is about $975,000; 60% of that are pledges from teams. This year, our team raised $2,877.00! Our friends, family and neighbors were amongst the contributors.

Team Leisure Fitness, with 11 riders, joined in to raise awareness and funds for MS riding ElliptiGo’s. Our team participated in the 17 mile route. The team started out at Uncle Ted’s rest stop in Milton and rode to the finish in just a few hours. After crossing the finish line at Delaware Seashore State Park, all participants were greeted with music, food, and all other sorts of festivities. Our team, had a tent set up with lots of goodies: food, drinks, equipment to test out, and of course, ElliptiGo test rides. We also raffled off one of our Life Fitness Body Shape Kit’s. Even though the wind kicked up, making our ride on the ElliptiGo’s slightly more challenging, the day was great overall. We had the opportunity to support a great cause and meet many new people. We would like to thank everyone who stopped by our tent to visit us and all of our supporters- We couldn’t have done it without you!

About Multiple Sclerosis

  • Multiple sclerosis is  a disease of the central nervous system. It interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body.
  • Every hour in the United States, someone is newly diagnosed with the disease.
  • The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS.
  • Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease.
  • Worldwide, more than 2.1 million are affected by MS- 400,000 are living in the U.S.

About the National Multiple Sclerosis Society
MS stops people from moving. The National MS Society exists to make sure it doesn’t. We help each person address the challenges of living with MS. In 2011 alone, through our national office and 50-state network of chapters, we devoted $164 million to programs and services that improved the lives of more than one million people. To move us closer to a world free of MS, the Society also invested $40 million to support more than 325 new and ongoing research projects around the world. We are people who want to do something about MS now.  Join the movement at nationalMSsociety.org. In Delaware, call (302) 655-5610. Or visit www.MSdelaware.org.

TFCU Employee Health Fair

by on September 17th, 2012

Leisure Fitness had the privilege of attending the Tower Federal Credit Union Employee Health Fair on September 12th. In attendance were approximately 100 employees who lined up to complete screenings for Health Risk Assessments and learn more about health related topics. The cafeteria was converted to accommodate screening stations. At these stations, employees were tested or measured for body composition, waist circumference, blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose levels. Nurse Practitioners were on site to provide health counseling as the final step in the risk assessments. Together, with each individual, they discussed results from blood work, body composition, and etc. The nurses also provided employees with health education and advice relevant to their results. Becky Vogt, HR Generalist & organizer of this wonderful event, explained that the health fair is held every year and that it is part of their Wellness program, an important addition to their benefits package.

The ElliptiGo, the main attraction, had people gawking and commenting on “that strange looking bike”, commented a small child to his mother.
